I’ve been to Starbucks only on a few of occasions: once to buy hot chocolate and another time with a colleague as she bought her ~$5 specialty brew. I, for one, cannot understand why so many people want to pay so much money for a cup of coffee! I mean, what ever happened to coffee flavored coffee that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?!?!?!? |
My understanding is that Starbucks is a bit like In and Out Burger. The menu is relatively simple, but they’ll fix you just about anything you can dream up with the ingredients on hand. This means there are all sorts of non-coffee drinks that you can order. When I travel I’ll go there for breakfast if one is on the way to work and get a venti hot chocolate and some sort of muffin. It is expensive, but at least I know what I’m getting. I know some people that get hot milk with vanilla and claim it is wonderful. |
My wife introduced me to a drink that I really like. You ask for a soy-milk steamer with almond flavoring. It’s a hot drink that tastes great and is very soothing. It really helps to kill the frigid NYC cold when it hits. |
I’ve been to Starbucks once, and it was to meet with a potential carpool partner. |
Frankly, if I do go, it’s none of your business. |
TonyP, you’re sounding a little touchy there … |
They make a great hot chocolate. And it’s a great place to get the NY Times and read it. My wife also loves the peppermint hot chocolate. It was a place I went to often to write my dissertation–three kids at home, school was 30 minutes away, Starbucks was down the street. Ah, the good old days. |
Never gone to Starbucks in my life. Neither has my wife. Kind of puts the “everyone, even Mormons” into question. |
Jettboy, One the other hand, assuming that the “everyone” statement is true, it means that you are not a part of “everyone”, right? I had never been in one until a few years ago though, and I assume that many, many people have never been in one. |
I think some might be feeling a little pressured by the post for some reason or are taking the wording too seriously. It’s Friday, folks. Lighten up. Have some fun. Comment if you feel like it. This wasn’t intended to be controversial. |
danithew, Would you like cream or non-dairy lightener with that light-hearted post? |
The caramel apple cider is another good buy. |
Agreed on the Caramel Apple Cider. Also, the steamed milks in various flavors are good. However, Starbucks is a ripoff for any and everything that they sell. Try not going into a Starbucks when you live in the Pacific Northwest and there is a Starbucks in every corner. |
LOL to Brian Duffin’s comment. In the interest of full disclosure, we have a Starbucks that is basically across the street from us (more or less). I rarely go in there, but in the winter months it’s more tempting. |
I usually go during the summer when I am playing host to “Summer Associates” at the firm. They make an almost daily “Starbucks Run” to the Starbucks in the basement of our building, and the firm pays. Because I go to Starbucks most often during the summer, I usually get a vanilla or strawberry creme or an iced passion tea. Delicious! During the winter I favor a peppermint hot chocolate. I also like the cranberry orange muffins. I am going to have to try caramel apple cider now, too. |
Note that the Vanilla Creme I usually get is iced (summer and all). |
Grande soy, 8-pump hot chocolate, no whip. |
Back when I was in the “less active” phase of my disaffection, I determined that breaking the WofW would be a fairly harmless way to express my rebel self. I was living in Ohio at the time (after the hurricane) and they have Tim Horton’s there. Each day for a week, I bought a Hot Smoothie from Tim’s on the way to work. They had five flavors. Vanilla, Chocolate, English Toffee, Caramel, and Raspberry. I tried them in that order. I got to the Raspberry on Friday. I realized when I tasted the raspberry that they didn’t have any COFFEE in them! Two hundred sixty calories each and it wasn’t even a sin. |
pre-lds, i’d get the frozen tazoberry drink, no whip. i still craaaaave that drink! i’ve never so much as tried coffee and can’t stand the smell, but as a first generation amurrican descended from a bunch o’ brits, i’m a tea girl. er, WAS a tea girl. almost a decade later, i still long for the day the prophet tells me i can have a cup or glass of tea. i digress. used to be caramel apple cider till i discovered peppermint hot cocoa, no whip. we used to live somewhere that kept peppermint syrup as a seasonal item, so i bought my own syrup off of ebay. yum. |
I’ve got a couple of Starbucks Gift Certificates. In fact, I ended up trading one the other day because I have too many. I like the steamers, the italian hot chocolate was great, but gone now. |
I’m always a sucker for a tall peppermint tea. I know, I know – I can make it at home for a fraction of the cost, but my husband and I like to get our drinks (he’s a hot coco fan) and sit on the sidewalk outside watching Los Angeles parade before us and ask ourselves why in the world we live here. |
There are two Starbucks within a two block radius from my apartment in NYC. I GO ALL THE TIME! The best thing for the Mormons is a Toffee Nut Steamer. I also like the Double Chocolate Chip Frap. The Caramel Apple Cider isn’t too shabby either. |
Steamed Milk with Almond Extract – Divine |
I’ve had a hard time justifying the cost, so I’ve only been twice, both times when I was on vacation and with a friend who wanted to stop by. Once I got a plain hot chocolate and once I got a fruit-topped danish. The hot chocolate tasted fine but wasn’t really worth the cost. The danish was delicious. |
I usually get the caramel apple cider with whip and cinnamon powder. |
i’m more of a coffee bean fan myself. |
I only go to Starbucks with my coffee drinking friends and usually buy bottled water and buy a chocolate milk for my kids. |
Depending on the time of year I get one of the following: -Non-fat Peppermint hot chocolate with whip. (always get weird looks when I get non-fat but still get whip cream) -Carmel-Apple cider…with whip of course Or my favorite: I heart starbucks. |
Hot Chocolate….but honestly it isn’t very good there. I prefer my homemade brew!!!! Yummy! |
YOu can buy great milkshakes |
leigul, What is your homemade recipe? If you’re doing better than they are, I’m impressed. At home I put a mug of milk in the microwave for 2:30 and then add three giant scoops of Quick and a handful of marshmallows. That is better than any water based variety (such as Stephens, bleech!) but I do like what Starbucks has. |
Awe, I love Stephens hot cocoa…you did know you can use milk instead of water right? |
Pumpkin-spiced steamer? Hadn’t heard of that one. I’m going to have to try it. |
Veritas, I’ve tried it and the stuff doesn’t dissolve very well in milk. Perhaps I need to give it another go. I am frustrated by those that prefer watery Stephens to anything made with milk. |
If I weren’t Mormon I think I would be a heavy coffee drinker. Anyway, one time I had a really tasty vanilla milk thingy. Oh, but that was at the Coffee and Bean place. (whatever it’s called) |
I know old but nonetheless… Strawberry, vanilla and double choc chip fraps are GREAT! Then the Peppermint hot choc. I am married to a non member and it really is a blessing they offer other things cuz this way we can go together and have a lil date! LOL! |
I agree with Rhapsidiomite, if it wasn’t for my Mormon conviction, I’d be a coffee fanatic. This is why I usually order a venti drip with two add shots and it really perks up my mood when work gets to me. I don’t know how they do it, I’m just glad there isn’t any caffeine in it. |
When I first went to Starbucks I would order either hot chocolate (winter) or creme frappuccino (summer). But, being so near the “appearance of evil” and all, I found that I was on a slippery slope being led carefully down to hell. One day, I ordered a Grande Cinnamon Dolce Latte. Once I did that, I could only think critical thoughts about my priesthood leaders. And I was physically unable to write out a tithing check. Having succumbed to the great evil of coffee drinking, I next started having the occasional beer and wine with dinner. And started posting in the DAMU. Next thing you know, I was a full-fledged crack addict and raging bitter apostate. Oh, ye fair ones of the Bloggernacle! May you shake at even the appearance of a green and white mermaid logo! May you never enter the portals of the devil’s own franchise again–even for a non-hot-drink hot chocolate or frothy frappuccino, lest you suffer the same fate that befell the once-noble true-believing Equality. Save yourselves! |
I drank frapps for about 12 years. fully loaded. 8 pumps of Chai. Try that, Chai Creme Frap with 8 pumps of Chai. Yummy. Hey, they’re cold. Very Cold. Not hot in my belly. The calories were finally too much, so I switched to house blend coffee, hot, of course. After a few years of hot drinks, the church left me:( |
Finally, you freakin’ apostates have something to talk about here. |
I know caffeine is a diuretic, but how did the church leave you, Rey? |
Starbucks? I think I remember driving past one once… |
Mmmm… Starbucks hot cocoa is my absolute favorite! Add a pump of vanilla to it or almond for something different and it’s heaven in a cup! I worked as a barista in college at a shop not too unlike Starbucks and tried every drink we had on the menu. It was during my “less active” days and still couldn’t bring myself to actually enjoy coffee. A good friend there was also a “less active” Mormon and tried to convince me coffee was the ultimate college aid but as much as I love the smell, I still can’t stand the after taste. I’m grateful I never developed a coffee habit but still love to enhale the scents in Starbucks! Just as an “oh, by the way…” did you know the smell of coffee beans is considered a “palate cleanser” for the nose and can settle an upset stomach? When I was pregnant with my first child, coffee beans made an appearance at my house for this very reason. So I guess there is a purpose to having the stuff around even if you don’t drink it. |

Many people go and visit the Starbuck just to buy expensive coffee. What else will you be doing inside the Starbucks if you are not going to buy? |
@45) They serve other things besides coffee, like lemonade, like pastries, Don’t be so judgmental. Some people go just to hangout and talk with friends and I’ve actually seen people have meetings. There’s nothing wtong. |
Everyone have the privilege to go and visit star bucks to have some coffee. Even the Mormons need to spend a little peaceful time while having coffee. |
Hi Daniel Bartholomew, I used to be so frustrated beacuse I couldn`t find useful information on the internet. Then I uncovered your site in google and this is helpful. Thank you! |
I’m a born and raised mormon, but I own a starbucks frenchise and I sell all the coffee I want and I drink it some times to control the quality of the product. I dont see the problem in that. |
