Regarding the court’s decision” Amen and amen. |
Annegb, Wow, have I really come that close to convincing you? This decision is a good one. Unfortunately it will probably be overturned by Bush’s Supreme Court. It is exactly for cases like these that he got Federalist Society (a secret combination) members on the Court (Alito and Roberts). By the way, did you see this report which showed that the Bush administration used the children of suspected terrorists as leverage against them? |
I also highly recommend Marty Lederman’s analysis of the court ruling, and hilzoy’s analysis as well. Both hit the mark. Note specifically that al-Marri was first arrested and charged for minor offenses. Only a whole 18 months after his arrest was he named an “enemy combatant” by Bush. I wonder what changed… |
The sooner we dismantle the entire Bush domestic security legacy, the better. Fear is no basis for running a free society. |
This is a serious question. Has the IRS not been engaging in this sort of abuse of our civil liberties for decades already? Tax collectors can collect information about us that nobody else can, seize property without due process and ultimately imprison people. If you have a dispute with the IRS, you don’t get a jury trial; your case is decided by three judges, one of whom is an IRS employee. Look through some back issues of The Nation and you’ll read some pretty hair-raising stories about law abiding people whose lives were ruined by overzealous tax collectors who were either mistaken or malevolent. While we don’t know how many people have been targeted by the patriot act, I think it is safe to say that the number of victims of systematic IRS abuse is hundreds of times larger. They foreclose on hundreds of homes every day, and I have a hard time believing they are all tax deadbeats. |
Amen to Seth and Dan. Come to the dark side Anne – it is nice over here… |
Search your feelings Annegb … use the force. |
don’t listen to Senator Palpatine…er…I mean danithew, annegb. Just remember, Darth Vader also said “search your feelings.” |
Except on that occasion Dan, he also happened to be right. |
Dan, Forgive my knee jerk skepticism of secret combination claims, but unless you were the insider who risked life and limb to escape these Gadiantons I just cant take you seriously. |
Doc, I’m not that wacky yet. |
I think the Council of Foreign Relations is a secret combination, and that club that’s in the Good Shepherd. I think Tragedy and Hope was the truth. But I don’t think they’re as powerful as some believe. They’re certainly not more powerful than God. |
