ARJ–if you show my documentary (or rather our documentary), the teacher will undoubtedly have HIS recommend removed. What qualifies as a crappy movie for EQ? I often show the youth short Church videos, because I’m always trying to find SOMETHING to keep their interest, and snickers bars last only so long. What kinds of movies have they been showing in your ward? The actual rules state that no media production should be played in a SS class which does not have the official Church logo on it. So that means we’ll mostly watch women with big hair and men in plaid suits when we put on a video. Unless it’s _Johnny Lingo_. But surely you’re not talking about _Johnny Lingo_. |
The other Sunday I was asked to speak on the law of chastity. There was no discussion when I spoke about the new view for Gays in the Church. And there was no discussion when talking about other taboo subjects that were all Church approved right from SW Kimble Manuel. a random John is correct. Although our ward is kinda non-traditional. We still don’t have that sort of candor that would make for a really thought provoking, faith stirring EQ meeting. I hope all my talks are controversial and backed up with Church approved sources. I just got my Ticket (Temple Recommend) I don’t want it to be yanked this soon or at all. Jamie Trwth |
Margaret, The link was to the IMDB entry for the movie we watched, McKay, Million Dollar Missionary about a kid that played HS football and baseball, made a deal with God that if He repaired McKay’s torn ACL that he’d go on a mission. To make a long story short he faced some pressure to not go on a mission from baseball teams. He was drafted, went on a mission, came home and played some baseball. Most of it (30 minutes worth) was highlights from his high school football days. I’ll admit that it looks like he was a great football player. I just don’t know what that has to do with EQ. Personally I think he’s crazy for not going to Stanford for free, but I’m sure that he came out ahead financially. I really doubt that your documentary could be as offensive to me in the context of EQ as this movie was. |
ARJ, it sounds like the planned instructor didn’t show up. If not, woe unto your instructor! |
we NEVER get to watch movies, crappy or nice, in my EQ meeting. :( It’s alright though, I’m now in the branch presidency, so I have a somewhat justifiable excuse to not be there. :) |
KyleM, No, he was the planned instructor. |
On a similar vein, I used to end up in EQ meetings where the instructor pulled a general conference talk on video, and under the excuse of “Elder X says this so much better than I could,” entirely avoided teaching any lesson at all. The entire class consisted of watching an old conference talk. Not to dispairage the brethren giving the original talks, but this is a ridiculous use of EQ lesson time. It’s a mere cop-out by an instructor who’s too lazy to actually prepare a lesson. |
seriously, can somebody fill me in on Johnny Lingo? I’m a convert. at age 25 i went in the temple with the YW to do baptisms for the first time. It was so incredibly built up in my mind… the house of the Lord, the celestial kingdom on earth, the purest peace and inspiration and spirit I could possibly touch from this side of the veil. |
Johnny Lingo was a ploy by the diamond industry to convince young LDS women that their self esteem should be determined by the size of the engagement diamond, and a marketing technique to convince young LDS males that you show your betrothed how much you love her by paying a lot for her ring. hehehe…. I’m only kidding of course. The diamond industry probably wasn’t very involved. |
cchrissyy, The original Johnny Lingo was made by the Church in 1969. Even in the 1980s it was considered horribly dated, seen as unintentionally funny and has now become something of a cult classic. I certainly won’t think it would be an appropriate film to show in the temple these days, due to the fact that it might cause loud laughter, not to mention the aspects that are offensive to modern sensibilities. |
“I certainly won’t think it would be an appropriate film to show in the temple these days,” Notwithstanding the quality or subject matter of the film, my largest shock was that they were playing any movie at all in there. If there must be a film shown inside temples (ahem…) I’d expect it to be educational and important, not just something popped in for entertainment of people sitting around waiting. Furthermore, it seems if the process must involve long waits, they would be used for quiet reflection, scripture reading, and prayer. Can’t do that much with any movie playing. |
ARJ, do you have one instructor or many? I only teach once a month and would never waste it with a video. I would be dumbfounded if one of the other instructors did either. Nick, your instructor was right. Due to lack of preparation, Elder X most likely did say it much better than your instructor could. cchrissyy, Johnny Lingo is the exception to all the rules. I didn’t even know they had movies in the temple other than the endowment. Things have changed since I was a youth. Tangent: Can “LDS pop culture” really exist? |
KyleM, We have more than one person called as an instructor. Also members of the EQ are occasionally called on to teach, usually on the 4th Sunday. I volunteered myself to the EQ president about a year ago to teach if they needed someone on short notice. I’ve probably taught about half a dozen times since then, enough that the new EQP thought I was a regular instructor. |

Candleman, So are you saying that I’m fault finding or that the guy who gave the “lesson” is idle? |
And if its the former, then back at you! :) |
I like when they show movies because they turn off the lights and I can nap, or play tetris, or read. |
If I were to ever leave the church over anything, it would probably be the banality of Elder’s Quorum lessons. Fortunately, I serve in the Young Men’s organization and don’t have to sit through those lessons any more. |
