This is sad news. What a wonderful man, prophet and leader we had in him. He was simply incredible. We loved him and we’ll miss him. |
I’m very saddened by this news. Annegb once reacted to one of his talks by saying, “What a guy!” This hits the nail on the head, and it characterized the way I felt pretty much every time I heard him speak. His gentle humor, his counsel, the love that he felt for the church and its gospel and its history, the mantle that he bore has our prophet. Gordon B. Hinckley was giant among giants. I’ll miss him always. |
We must remember that it is a sad day for us here but it is always a glorious day in heaven. He will be missed. But he will be greeted by many who love him especially his loving wife. Jamie Trwth |
He did so much for the church. Thank you President Hinckley. Enjoy your rest with your wife and family. |
Wow. The end of an era. He’s been the leader of the church for as long as I can remember. First he was the acting president when the prophet at the time was very ill. Then later he became prophet himself. I’m gonna miss his kindness, his sense of humor and his conviction. I don’t wanna go to work right now. I need more time to be sad. |
From a recent New Cool Thang: 1. When asked about the Health of President Hinckley, Anderson said his mind is clear, but he is weakening. Meetings are shorter than they were a year ago, though Hinckley is still in the office everyday. He delegates more to his councilors. In a recent meeting, when a 70 mentioned he had been at his Mother’s 106th birthday during the weekend, Hinckley stood up and quipped, “when I heard about that 106th birthday, I thought that would be nice, but then I stood up and felt all my bones!” At least his bones aren’t bothering him anymore. |
Agree with all - great man who will be missed, but I am sure he can use the rest. He ran and ran while in his 90’s more than anyone much younger. They mentioned his passing on NPR this morning and had a nice tribute. |
I was listening for something on NPR and had just gotten a little mad at their omission when the brief story started. So NPR has redeemed itself. It feels selfish to want him to have stayed longer. But I still do. He had such an expansive vision of the Church, and I will miss catching glimpses of it whenever I heard him speak. |
Pres. Hinckley was the perfect leader for the Church for our time. With the increasingly intense media focus on the Church over the past several years (2002 Winter Olympics, Mitt Romney’s candidacy, etc.), he was unmatched in his ability to project openness and optimism. I’m really grateful for his leadership and example. |
I just heard that the Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox church just passed away. I don’t know that much about the organization of the Greek Orthodox Church–would this be their equivalent to a prophet? I’ve been moping around a little bit this morning, but suddenly I had this thought that President Hinckley would probably disapprove of wasting my employer’s time by reading effusive praise of him! So back to work with me. |
Yes, Archbishop Christodoulos’ death for the Greek Orthodox Church is very much like President Hinckley’s death for us. I wonder how some of the members in isolated places without church organization and internet access will get the news. |
Naomi, I can almost here Hinckley saying, “Don’t blog about me. I’m dead!” and getting a good laugh from the audience. Perhaps this is one area where it’s permissible to ignore the prophet’s (probable) counsel. |
He was truly a great, Nobel, spiritual and al around funny leader of our church. |
I was watching Music and the Spoken Word yesterday morning (we play it in the background while we’re getting ready for church). Because of the music selection and the narration, I had the distinct thought - “I wonder if President Hinkley is ill, because the theme here seems to be providing comfort as someone is passing onto their next estate. I wonder if the choir selected these songs for President Hinkley” Sure enough, later that evening we heard the news. Did anyone else get that sense listening to the broadcast? |
President Gordon B. Hinckley is the only living Prophet I’ve known. This morning on BYU-tv I saw a repeat of his “6 B’s” talk. “In November of 2000, President Hinckley challenged us to set goals for ourselves to be grateful, be smart, be clean, be true, be humble, and be prayerful. The six “Bs,” as President Hinckley called them, are a marvelous standard for all Latter-day Saints.” His love and compassion are beyond words. I believe he is SO happy now, reunited with his eternal companion. What rejoicing in heaven today! |
I was lucky enough to have had a personal encounter with him as well as serve with his grandson on my mission. I have some experiences on my website: |
He was this generation’s David O. McKay. In 30 years, we’ll still be quoting him to our grandchildren, who will say to themselves, “Weren’t there any OTHER prophets that our grandparents liked, other than Gordon B. Hinckley?” I have fond memories of some of his talks. |
queuno: amen. Lots of big strides forward happened under President Hinckley’s helmsmanship. I believe he was the “effective” president since 1982 (when he was made 3rd counselor in the 1st presidency) until Ezra Taft Benson became president, and then became the effective president again at some point during President Benson’s tenure. (I wasn’t paying attention during President Hunter’s presidency.) Of course, I don’t think any major step was taken without full approval of the 12, and the Lord of course. I’ve been spiritually bonked on the head (and kicked in the behind) enough times to know that the Lord can make his will known when he wants to. If the Lord cares about the little people like me, I have no doubt he guides people at all levels. |
I think of Hinckley’s words on road rage frequently as I commute the AZ freeways. I will be interested to see Monson’s focus. He is very personable and sweet like Hinckley was, but in a more folksy way. |

Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley is the only living Prophet that I ever saw in my entire life as an LDS.He visited our country during the time that I was less active in the Church and my faith is somehow unstable, but when I saw him walking from the main entrance towards the stage where he is about to speak, people were applauding and waving at him and there was this unexplainable feeling that I had within me,an assurance that this man is indeed a Prophet of God who holds the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven in these latter days.I will surely miss his humility, his wisdom ,his humor and the great love that he had for the Church and its people.Thank you dear Prophet for dedicating your whole life for all of us…. |
Thanks for that quote. Very nice. |
There are so many quote from this wonderful man that we followed for so long. We can’t find them all but as we gather each little bit and peice. We can hold it and treasure it as a sacret part of out guidance. President Hinckley was so humble and special to me that that I will always remember his words. His teachings were so tender and touching and are in my heart. My love and prayers are with his family always. I know the Prophet is with his wife teaching the gospel together again, they are most likely with the past Prophets. |
