Welcome–I look forward to reading your posts. |
DCcLemon – I highly recommend “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child” by Dr. Marc Weissbluth. It was recommended by one of my law professors when she found out we couldn’t get our daughter to sleep for longer than 2 hour stints at night and 20 minute naps during the day. She was 10 months old at the time. It saved my marriage and our collective sanity. |
Jota- thank you. I will have to get that book. He is currently 3 and1/2 months old, and in the past we have done the ferber method when they are around 6 months old. But with him, I am just getting a little desperate. |
DCcLemon, I believe Dr. Weissbluth starts his advice younger than 6 months. Some things I remember taking away from the book: 1. correct sleep patterns are not instinctual, usually they must be learned and bad habits must be unlearned (thus the importance of starting early), 2. night sleep must be normalized before napping becomes normalized, 3. you must be overprotective of your children’s sleep schedule, 4. Children who do not sleep through the night are overtired and should be put to bed earlier, 5. no harm will come to the child if you decide to allow her to sooth herself back to sleep (assuming there are no other problems), and 6. there are significant medical and behavioral benefits when a child gets enough sleep. |
I like the sleep section in THE BABY WHISPERER (hate the title, but good stuff in the book). |
ESO and Jota- thank you! I’ll head to the library and get them. |
