I really appreciate your nuanced view of the OT. One nice thing about the OT is that it provides a lowest common denominator among works of scripture. But I think wrestling with the difficult texts is in some ways a better moral/intellectual exercise than if everything was what we would expect/hope it to be. In comparison, I think a scripture that lacks that narrative-base and diversity of sources (I'm thinking of the Qur'an here) really suffers. My personal definition for the scriptures is: "a sacred history of highly dysfunctional families." I really like the Old Testament.
