Mormon Mentality - Thoughts and Asides by Peculiar People

As you’ve probably already noticed, Mormon Mentality has been down for nearly a week. I apologize for this inconvenience.

As luck would have it, the machine that hosts Mormon Mentality suffered a very severe crash that required me to rebuild everything from scratch. This, of course, took some time (I still don’t have LDSelect up and running yet).

The fact that I injured my back just before the server crashed created a perfect storm for a Mormon Mentality blog-outage. I’ve been stuck in bed, barely able to venture out long enough for a quick visit to the bathroom, and nothing seems to be getting better. Nevertheless, the state of this site embarrassed me enough that I set out this afternoon to repair it, and now I’m going to take some more pain reliever and go to sleep.

Unrequested Medical Advice Alert: I’ve suffered lower back problems several times, but just a few months ago I was absolutely paralyzed with pain. It took me over an hour just to creep up the stairs and climb into bed. The physical therapist had me do some “cobra stretches” and I was 70% better by the time I left her office and 95% better within two days. Since then I’ve felt the back stiffness coming back after certain long days hunched over at work, so I just drop and do a few cobras and avert disaster. Too much bed rest, as good as it sounds and feels, will often make back problems worse. fwiw.

I tried physical therapy and chiropractic and got an epidural in my spine and Darvocet is what helped. I even put a traction set on my head, flat on my back on the floor with a brick hanging off my head. Drugs. They’re the bomb.

BrianJ, thanks for recommending the cobra stretch. I googled it, and found a wealth of material, and based on that I’ve been experiencing improvement.
