Do you ever wonder who picks out the General Conference Talks to use for the Relief Society and Priesthood lessons? In our stake, it is a schedule put out by the Stake President, and our SP has recently indicated he would accept some input. I have some ideas, but I wonder about you: which of the most recent General Conference talks would you nominate to be studied across your stake?

Margaret Lifferth. Hers just about the first talk by a woman that is aimed at the entire church, not just the Primary or YW, and was a talk that fits one of our ward goals.

But in our stake she won’t make the cut. The SP automatically picks the talks by First Presidency and apostles, regardless of how inapplicable they might be (e.g., addressed to deacons about not cheating in school or on the sports field) to either Relief Society or Melchizedek Priesthood quorums.

I’ll second the Lifferth nomination.

Certainly Holland’s talk, even though that might seem obvious.

And Bishop Edgley’s talk from Priesthood. That should be proclaimed from the treetops. I think it even fits in Relief Society, with some minor changes.

In our ward, the ward council selects talks for the upcoming 6 months in January and June.

Of course I don’t know your ward, but thinking of the people in My ward and the church in General, these are my favorites:

Elder Perry – Let him Live with Simplicity OCtober 08
Elder Hales – Being A PRovident Provider April 09
Bishop Edgely- This is YOUR phone Call April 09
Elder Bednar- The one where he says that you can’t pray to the lord for the missionaries to do YOUR job.

When I was in the EQ presidency, we picked the sermons to be used.

In our Stake the Bishops and Branch Presidents choose the talks that are used. We always get at least one from the General Women’s conference or Young Women’s conference (depending on which session was delivered), and one from the Priesthood Session, usually one that was directed at the Young Men, but all are chosen prayerfully. They do not always come from the First Presidency or the Twelve. I know because I have watched my husband, who is the Branch President, pouring over the Ensign again each month as he tries to decide what our little branch needs to be hear that month. They are always good lessons no matter what. I like that we are getting them at unit level rather than Stake level.

The Stake Presidency chooses the GC talk for every other month. The bishops are in charge of choosing the rest depending on what they feel their ward needs. I must say our bishop is always looking for input which is nice. These are our ward’s list until next conference

Elder Gary E Stevenson “Sacred Homes, Sacred Temples”
Elder Richard G Scott “Temple Worship: The Source of Strength and Power in Times of Need”
Sister Mary N. Cook “A Virtuous Life – Step by Step” while not technically given at General Conference it is in the GC issue of the Ensign.
