****The e-mail cited below is an internet hoax. Andy Rooney didn’t say these things. I skimmed through it hastily and liked the point about 70% of the population being 70% of those arrested (which I don’t believe is true, either) and put it up to stir the pot. I then left for work and didn’t get back till the next day. Had I been watching, it would have been deleted after comment #2.
DKL and I have discussed deleting it now, but I believe many good arguments have been raised; therefore, I’m leaving it up. I hate it when people are having a good argument and the host blog shuts it down abruptly; the blog equivalent of “hanging up” on one. It leaves one feeling disrespected, rejected, and resentful.
I apologize to my fellow bloggers for my error and for the message it conveys about our blog. I am not above criticism and I’m wondering where all the critics are who would be coming out of the woodwork if David did it. I believe Mormon Mentality is the most liberal and welcoming of the blogs, and my post and the opinions engendered here go against type. I ask guests not to judge us based on this.
Some of the points we’re arguing about are worth arguing about. The ideas that every conservative is a bigot and every liberal is stupid are worthy of shredding. It’s not bigoted of David to resent his experience in his neighborhood. It’s his life, he has the right to comment on it without it being made into a racial issue.
On the other hand, it’s not stupid of ESO to object to my blanket observations about foreigners learning the language. It’s her life; she knows more about the subject. We’re all talking from a place of emotion and personal experience. I ask all to take that into consideration and conduct the discussion from a place of tolerance; in this case I suppose I’m asking liberals for tolerance and conservatives for reasonableness.
I’m a moderate, despite some of my outrageous comments. I believe we can find a middle ground; no, I believe we MUST find a middle ground. Our country’s diversity is a fact that we can’t fight; nor should we. I believe this is sort of like labor pains, we’re all going through a period of change and adaptation and that 1950’s view of America simply doesn’t exist anymore. But both sides have to adapt.
So I’m leaving this up, with the absolute caveat that the original e-mail post is falsely attributed to Andy Rooney. The rest of it is open game for discussion.*******
I’m not a huge fan of Andy Rooney; maybe we’re too much alike. But I like what he says here. A friend sent it to me as a forward, which I usually don’t read. As it is, she sent me this April 15. I agree with Andy, but with a caveat: his references to immigrants applies to Americans who emigrate to other countries. Were I to move to Mexico (God forbid), say, I’d learn to speak Spanish. It’s common courtesy. If an American decides to live in another country and refuses to adapt or learn the language, they’re just as guilty of rudeness as are the multitudinous Mexicans who expect America to adapt to them.
So, here is what Andy Rooney had to say:
I don’t think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers. The only things I can think of t hat are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens… Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.
Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.
I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, which is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts! ARE YOU LISTENING, MARTHA BURKE? I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion.
I have the right “NOT” to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off.
When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling; it is the Law of Probability.
I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!
My father and grandfather didn’t die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours.
I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can’t understand the word “freeze” or “stop” in English, see the above lines.
I don’t think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business.
We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations.
I don’t hate the rich; I don’t pity the poor. I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television. That doesn’t stop you from watching them.
I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that’s better, and put your name on the building.
It doesn’t take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say “NO!”
I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don’t pretend they are a political statement. And, please, stay home until that new lip ring heals. I don’t want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me French fries!
I am sick of “Political Correctness.” I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa ; so how can they be “African-Americans”? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don’t go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else.
And if you don’t like my point of view, tough…
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , AND TO THE REPUBLIC, FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LI BERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!
