I’ll start us off with U2′s “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own,” which is about Bono’s dad who was dying of cancer. Though after seeing this video [warning: explicit language] now I always think about Samuel Jackson when I hear the song. |
This is the CD I made for Bill. He loves it. Arc of a Diver Steve Winwood I’ve made some rather cool CD’s. I think I should be a DJ. |
That is a cool CD Anne. Tagore, I must admit that I liked the playlist from Hallmark and many of the songs are actually quite nice. Of course I am the sappy type… |
Cat Stevens – Father & Son |
Why would anyone feel a need to turn to country for that list when we have Squeeze Box, by The Who? |
Hank Williams Sr.’s “My Son Calls Another Man Daddy” is a timeless Father’s Day favorite. |
“Song For Dad” by Keith Urban. :) |
All I can think of are awful ones. A lot of famous singers had daddy issues, apparently. “Father of Mine” – Everclear |
rent (for obvious reasons) – pet shop boys |
Parents Just don’t Understand? |
Where is Susan M when we need her? |
I don’t think pop or rock was much of a chance against country in this category. The demographics and direction are just too much against it. By the time rock musicians start feeling fatherly or have wistful feelings about their own fathers, they’re already past their prime. As an example, Sting in his solo career had a song about being a divorced father (“Laughing Through My Tears”) and an interesting one about being a son (“Soul Cages”), but the only Police songs about fatherhood are “On Any Other Day” and “Synchronicity II” which would be suitable only if accompanied by a card reading “Happy Fathers’ Day, you middle-aged loser. (signed) Your completely indifferent offspring.” |
Michael Jackson — Billie Jean |
Do they have to be only positive songs? Low – “Step” Sure I’d think of some more if I had more time. |
What? No “Cat’s in the Cradle” ? |
Ha, good call. I assumed someone had already posted it. |
Another sad one: |
Yeah, Devyn S., I admit I liked the Hallmark list, too. “Surely we can do better”? Bah! |
Darius “Hootie” Rucker, It Won’t Be Like This for Long Yeah, Hootie and the Blowfish went country. |
Susan M doesn’t disappoint! Nice work, everyone. PaulM (9): “Still haven’t found what I’m looking for” is totally a Mother’s Day song at our house. |
Nobody has mentioned Landslide yet… |
One that reminds me of Cat in the Cradle is Queensryche’s Bridge. Plus, there’s a shout out to father-like mentors there. |
Oh, and definitely Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.” Not a Creed fan, but I love that song. |
Tagore, that video is hilarious but there should be a warning appended. I was blasting that video and my mom happened to be nearby right when he sings “and those m—f— snakes” … Fortunately she didn’t notice … PHEW |
Jane’s Addiction – Had A Dad |
Also … The Police – “On Any Other Day” |
danithew: I think you should sit your mother down, have her read this fine piece of writing, and then play her the clip. But just in case, I’ll add a warning. |
This has been all over facebook today: |
When you coming home son I don’t know when/we’ll get together then… |
Hey there, I found your website a few days ago and have ploughed through all the posts quietly. I decided might make my firstpost. Unsure of what to say but anyway. Great site. Will come back in a bit to hear what else youve got to say. |
